Transportation
Transport industry includes domestic and international carriage goods and passengers by road, rail, air and water routes.
Transportation is one of the most developing business areas in the region. For more than a decade it is constantly developing as contacts with Western and Eastern countries are intensifying, domestic demand is increasing and new markets are entered. Convenient geographical position of the Baltic States and the nearby Baltic Sea has positive influence on the rapid development of transport services, therefore a significant part of cargo transported is transit cargo.
Accession of the Baltic States to the EU resulted in a rapid growth of the number of passengers carried by air. Especially successful is the area of cargo transport by trucks. Baltic carriers are among the strongest in the region and successfully compete with the companies from other countries. Cargo handling in Klaipėda, Rīga, Tallinn, Ventspils, Liepoja and Būtingė seaports is increasing, but they have to compete with Russian ports. However, transport service industry faces intense competition, especially with foreign enterprises, and various restrictions and constraints.
In the future this area should develop rapidly. New markets should be conquered, new transport projects will be developed.
